A journey of thousand miles begins with the first step. I am extremely happy to start this blog and exposing to the world about my own struggles and battles with mental health issues and reaching out to others who are waiting for the initial push to come out of the stigma society has about mental health and psychological well-being.
WHO defines mental health “as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”.
Psychological well-being is not merely about the lack of mental illnesses, it also encompasses a wide range of components in terms of finding a meaning and purpose in life to finding the “flow” in everyday life. There is a whole lot of research being conducted around what happiness means, and what constitutes a fulfilling life.
Particularly in India, there is an acute shortage of mental health professionals and mental health awareness. Approximately there are only 4000 psychiatrists for 1.3 billion people. It is pathetic. And the stigma associated and the misconceptions around mental illness are widespread. This blog is aimed at moving one step closer in clearing the myths and misconceptions people have around mental health and illness. Let’s get started.
